Shear Genius VS. Top Design

7) The stylists get to choose the models in innovative ways. Tyson walking through the line of models while touching their hair was priceless and a little creepy. (I love creepy.) In the second episode, only the top three short cut challenge winners got to see which celebrity hairdos their models wanted. Cool. In the third challenge, Tyson got to try his hand at strategy. Even better.

8) Most of Shear Genius is focused on the actual competition. Top Design wasted too much airtime following the judges around, and filming them taking notes or walking through the design sets. Their snooty discussions were so tiresome that I kept yelling at the screen – “Show the designers, you morons!”

9) Jaclyn Smith’s voice is sexier than Todd’s. And, despite that fact that she's worn the same hairdo since the middle ages, she knows hair.(Padma could take some hostessing lessons from her!)

10) Rene Fris.

There are more reasons why this show rocks, and one can never predict chemistry. I and a few million other people are having fun watching Shear Genius and that’s all that counts. Ms. Place

Dear Ms. Place,
Up yours. The Assistant

Well said, Ms. Place. Shear Genius is a delightful indulgence unlike Top Design which was Sheer Drudgery!

Top Design's failures were many, but to me:
1.Group challenges. They don't illustrate a designer's skill and are a waste of time.

2.The absolute "phoniness" of the challenges. Cleaning out someone's garage, indeed. How boring for us.

3.The judges' lack of credibility. Their decisions were based on whims. For example, they explained that a cabana should give shade from the sun and yet they chose as a winner the cabana that had no roof.

The "Elle magazine cover" as inspiration. Matt won and his room looked nothing like the cover.

They hated eggplant and banana as colors and yet bloggers showed eggplant and banana on the cover of Elle.

Ms. Place I totally agree.

Top Design biggest flaws were that there were too many contestants and too many group challenges. Starting out with a group challenge really hurt that show.

Shear Genius lets us see the contestants' technical skills and creativity. The show is fun to watch!

There was a mean-spiritedness to Top Design. It was a perfect choice to have that creepy Assistant be the letter writer since he was the ultimate example of the ugliness of the show. It had an unpleasant after-taste.

They focused on boring things. I don't really want to watch hammering and sawing. They didn't talk about interesting design aspects. The interactions were unpleasant and/or boring. The designs were ultimately not very interesting, either because of the challenges or the quality of the cast.

A quick challenge would be a good idea.

Not enough Todd time. Maybe Todd has a goofy demeanor (I like it)we often learned something from him and we got moments that weren't mean or boring.
